In June 2006, founder Matthew Higgins was working as a sales assistant at ANZ bank. In need of a suit, with no money to purchase one, Matt was forced to get creative. He phoned his cousin Benjamin, who worked for his uncle's menswear store in Sale and put forward an idea. "If I get a group of guys together at the bank, will you bring a range of suits, measure the boys up and deliver them?” Matt figured if Ben could get a few sales out of the boys at the bank, he would have to give Matt a discount on the suit he was in need of. Ben replied “Yeah sure, maybe we should put on a few beers too. If I sell a few, I will give you a discount."
Matt eagerly emailed his work mates to set up a date and the following week, the first 'suit party' took place. 10 suits were sold in the board room at that ANZ branch, and from that moment, Matt and Ben knew they were on to something. Not only did Matt get a discount, he got a great business idea that would prove to be successful...
As the idea evolved, two distinctive markets within the male suit industry were targeted; the male who hates shopping and the time-poor corporate male. With the knowledge that many men hated stepping foot in a shopping centre, Menzwear Direct was born.
Menzwear Direct began to visit corporate offices and homes of clients, where a small office or lounge room would be transformed temporarily into a menswear store. Clients would simply select a suit, be measured up and receive their fully tailored suit within ten business days.
In September 2006, Ex-AFL Footballer and Real Estate agent Daniel Breese became the first licensee of Menzwear Direct, when he began supplying tailored suits to the Melbourne Football Club. Daniel's passion to make this business the world’s largest mobile menswear store led him to become a joint Director in March 2007 and is the foundation for his strong business partnership with Matt.
Together, the two have worked together, driven towards continually improving the business and seeking out new opportunities. The company has expanded to 4 mobile suit vehicles and 5 full time consultants*, has recently launched a women’s range and is about to launch their own suit label, Briggins.
The Briggins range of suits aims to provide clients a range of high quality, fashion-forward suits at an affordable price. The launch coincides with the opening of the Briggins flagship store in July 2009, a name change that will be rolled out across all company communication points by December 2009.
